The following three glass railing installations feature amazing views of the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean in Marin and Sonoma Counties. By using Dupont’s SentryGlas laminated glass interlayer the coastal views are captured and provide a transparent barrier between the outdoor living spaces and nature.
We frequently use the Dupont’s .060 Sentry Glass Interlayer in deck rail applications where the deck railing must meet code requirements for human impact load or wind speed / wind load applications and client wants to maximize the view. Code requirements dictate the strength a glass railing system must meet and almost all cases a top cap is required in the local area where we do our installation work. When we need to meet code requirements but there is a desire to not have a top cap, we utilize’s Dupont’s SentryGlas.

Bodega Bay Project:
Project Team: McIntosh Builders, Santa Rosa, CA BFS Landscape Architects Old Town Glass Johnson Pool and Spa
Features 27/32″ and 1 1/16″ Clear Tempered Laminated Glass with an .060 SentryGlas Interlayer. The glass was installed into railing base shoe from CRL and embedded into concrete with Hilti Bolts and all thread. The glass acts as a Wind Screen, Guardrail and Pool Fence for a hotel pool.
Tiburon Project: Interior and Exterior Railings

Project Team: Old Town Glass Division 7 OnSpot Welding Danmeier Architects
This residential project in Marin County used 9/16″ Tempered Laminated Glass with the Dupont SentryGlas for both the interior and exterior railings. The exterior railing was set in a base shoe system and a CRL stainless steel cap was used to capture the edge of the glass. The interior railing was also 9/16″ thick, consisting of two pieces of 1/4″ tempered glass and an .060 interlayer. A handrail was added to the glass using handrail brackets and tubular stainless steel.

This project uses 27/32″ Tempered Laminated Glass in a CRL base shoe that is attached to a concrete deck with Hilti Bolts. The glass sits inside of a recessed channel that is embedded into the concrete. The photos were taken during the installation of the glass and the final product will feature stone covering the deck with the glass appearing to float from the deck’s surface.
