We recently worked with one of our custom steel fabricators to have a set of standoffs made for a deck railing. The engineer on the project specified 1/2″ thick bolts in order for the glass railing system to meet code requirements. A majority of the hardware suppliers that we work with use 3/8″ thick bolts on their standoff assemblies. We decided the best method to have the standoffs made with a 1/2″ bolt was to locally produce them. It was a team effort between a machinist, Lux Metals, Old Town Glass, and Sausalito Construction to produce a piece of hardware to support 1/2″ thick glass panels.
We started with a prototype that was produced for approval by the property owner. Once the prototype was produce and installed to test the design the remaining standoffs were made. Check out photos of the prototype and the of the finished railing system.
