Building Codes / Permits

Every city in Marin as well as un-incorporated area of Marin county in general follows the regulations set forth by the Uniform Building Code. In addition, all homes within the entire county now require a building permit for all new and/or replacement (retrofit or Z-bar) windows, skylights, and doors in both residential and commercial applications. In most areas of the county, building permits are strictly enforced, and  without the proper documentation you risk complications during the resale of your property.

Old Town Glass is a California State Licensed Contractor and where applicable we require that a permit be obtained prior to the date in which we are scheduled to perform the given work. Either a resident will apply for a permit for the quoted work, or if specified Old Town Glass will obtain a permit for a processing fee.

If you obtain your own permit, the jurisdiction may require you to provide proof of Old Town Glass’s workers compensation insurance and a business license.  A copy of our insurance and Contractor’s License may be printed by using the link below.  We can provide you with our business license for the city or town that we will be working in.

Marin Shower Door Codes, For Heavy Glass
The County of Marin has specific codes that apply to heavy glass shower enclosures.  In new construction or remodel applications, we are required to follow these design guidelines.

The City of San Rafael’s Building Dept has a downloaded pdf, available here, covering the shower glass codes.

Federal & State Building Codes for Egress
All bedrooms require sufficient egress (fire escape), ie.  there must be one qualified opening in each bedroom. Some jurisdictions, provide for an exception when replacing windows in homes constructed prior to code changes.  However, these are done on a case by case basis.  The City of Novato is the only jurisdiction in Marin that has a standing rule for exceptions.

The City of Novato Building Department’s egress codes depend on the year your home was built.
